Theme: Ontology Summit 2012: Ontology for Big Systems

7th in the series of a 3-month annual event by and for the Ontology Community. This Summit is co-organized by Ontolog, NIST, NCOR, NCBO, IAOA & NCO_NITRD

  • Ontology Summit 2012: General Co-chairs: Dr. Leo Obrst & Dr. NicolaGuarino
  • Ontology Summit 2012: Symposium Co-chairs: Dr. Ram D. Sriram & Professor MichaelGruninger

Goals

This year's Ontology Summit is titled "Ontology for Big Systems" and seeks to explore, identify and articulate how ontological methods can bring value to the various disciplines required to engineer a "big system." The term "big system" is intended to cover a large scope that includes many of the terms encountered in the media such as big data, complex techno-socio-economic systems, intelligent or smart systems, cloud computing, netcentricity and collective intelligence. Established disciplines that fall within the summit scope include (but not limited to) systems engineering, software engineering, information systems modelling, and data mining.
The principal goal of the summit is to bring together and foster collaboration between the ontology community, systems community, and stakeholders of some of the "big systems." Together, the summit participants will exchange ideas on how ontological analysis and ontology engineering might make a difference, when applied in these "big systems." We will aim towards producing a series of recommendations describing how ontologies can create an impact; as well as providing illustrations where these techniques have been, or could be, applied in domains such as bioinformatics, electronic health records, intelligence, the smart electrical grid, manufacturing and supply chains, earth and environmental, e-science, cyberphysical systems and e-government. As is traditional with the Ontology Summit series, the results will be captured in the form of a communiqué, with expanded supporting material provided on the web.
In the course of the Symposium, we shall summarize the results of the 3 months' research, discourse, analysis, synthesis and to disseminate this knowledge in the form of a broadly distributed communiqué collective produced by the participants of this Summit.

  • In-session chat-room url: http://webconf.soaphub.org/conf/room/OntologySummit2012
    • instructions: once you got access to the page, click on the "settings" button, and identify yourself (by modifying the Name field from "anonymous" to your real name, like "JaneDoe").
    • You can indicate that you want to ask a question verbally by clicking on the "hand" button, and wait for the moderator to call on you; or, type and send your question into the chat window at the bottom of the screen.
    • thanks to the soaphub.org folks, one can now use a jabber/xmpp client (e.g. gtalk) to join this chatroom. Just add the room as a buddy - (in our case here) OntologySummit2012@soaphub.org ... Handy for mobile devices!
  • Discussions and Q & A:
    • Nominally, when a presentation is in progress, the moderator will mute everyone, except for the speaker.
    • To un-mute, press "*7" ... To mute, press "*6" (please mute your phone, especially if you are in a noisy surrounding, or if you are introducing noise, echoes, etc. into the conference line.)
    • we will usually save all questions and discussions till after all presentations are through. You are encouraged to jot down questions onto the chat-area in the mean time (that way, they get documented; and you might even get some answers in the interim, through the chat.)
    • During the Q&A / discussion segment (when everyone is muted), If you want to speak or have questions or remarks to make, please raise your hand (virtually) by clicking on the "hand button" (lower right) on the chat session page. You may speak when acknowledged by the session moderator (again, press "*7" on your phone to un-mute). Test your voice and introduce yourself first before proceeding with your remarks, please. (Please remember to click on the "hand button" again (to lower your hand) and press "*6" on your phone to mute yourself after you are done speaking.)
  • For those who cannot join us, or who have further questions or remarks on the summit topic and content, please post them to the [ ontology-summit ] listserv so that everyone in the community can benefit from the discourse.
  • Please note that this session will be recorded, and if so, the audio archive is expected to be made available as open content, along with the proceedings of the call to our community membership and the public at-large under our prevailing open IPR policy.

  • Christopher Ireland / Melanie Melancon / Dennis Wisnosky (DoD) - DCMO Enterprise Information Web (EIW) Demonstration ... [ GotoMeeting connection ]
    • EIW is researching the adoption of semantic technology to support enterprise business intelligence and solution architectures in the DoD. This demonstration will show ontology-driven semantic federation using Web Ontology Language (OWL), SPARQL, and Relational to RDF Mapping Language (R2RML).
    • This demo will be done remotely by Chris Ireland, augmented by a shared-screen service from GotoMeeting and our voice conference bridge service for the remote participants (note: we are not using the VoIP)
    • Attention remote attendees: please try to establish a connection a few minutes before the demo is scheduled to start - you may need a couple of minutes to register, receive a Webinar ID in your email, and download the GotoMeeting client software first (the above link will guide you through the process.)
  • Fabian Neuhaus: NIST's Semantic Mediation and Validation Tool Kit ... [ slides ]
    • As part of the System Integration for Manufacturing and Construction Applications Program NIST is developing a tool kit that utilizes ontologies and automatic reasoning for information mediation and validation. The presentation will present a short overview over the architecture of the tool suite, and will focus on RECON and PrIKL. RECON parses a controlled English and translates it into IKL (an extension of ISO Common Logic). PrIKL is a automatic theorem prover for IKL.
  • Amanda Vizedom and Simon Spero: Ontology Summit 2012 Group Library and Bibliography
    • Each year, the Summit's many exchanges include a wealth of resource

sharing. References and materials are shared between summit participants in an an exchange of knowledge that contributes significantly to the quality and usefulness of the conversation. Some such references directly address questions raised; others disseminate recommended treatments of background knowledge and related topics. This year, we attempted to capture the this exchange into a persistent, shared biblography, incorporating a library of those reference materials that can be downloaded and shared publicly without cost or special permissions. References suggested by the community were added to an online group library accessible at https://www.zotero.org/groups/ontologysummit2012/items/collectionKey/CMDDWSCG. This group library is viewable by anyone (public), editable by any member of the group. We'll show some of the key features of this library and demonstrate how to use it and contribute to it.

repository of first-order ontologies that serve as a testbed for ontology evaluation and integration techniques, and that can support the design, evaluation, and application of ontologies in first-order logic. All ontologies are specified using Common Logic (ISO 24707),
