This is our 5th Ontology Summit, a joint initiative by NIST, Ontolog, NCOR, NCBO and IAOA with the support of our co-sponsors. The theme adopted for this Ontology Summit is: "Creating the Ontologists of the Future" and was launched on 10-Dec-2009. Like previous years, this Ontology Summit will comprise of three months of virtual discourse, over our archived mailing lists, wiki, and virtual panel sessions (like this one), and will culminate in a 2-day face-to-face workshop/symposium to be held on Mon & Tue, 15 & 16-March-2010 at NIST (Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA.)
    (1C1)
- Session Topic: Synthesizing the Community Input     (1C2)
- . Abstract:     (1C3)
- We shall be spending time at this session to look through the survey results and make sense of of the collective community input. Each of our 3 survey/study designers will present the collected input, make a first cut synthesis, and, in particular identify specific input that might impact what we produce as our consolidated "training content" document.     (1C4)
- The session will then go into Q&A and open discussion.     (1C5)
OntologySummit2010 - virtual panel-5 - Topic: "Synthesizing the Community Input"

anonymous morphed into Megan Mickelson
    (1D3S)
Ravi Sharma: @Amamnda: Wonderful work and presentation, Analytics rich and usable by us as we move
    (1D3T)
forward even post Summit. Regards. Ravi
    (1D3U)
Steve Ray: Interesting to note that only a quarter of respondents are from education. That's good for
    (1D3V)
broad coverage.
    (1D3W)
Ravi Sharma: @Amanda: For later response - Since I did not save my answers, can I retrieve my own
    (1D3X)
answers to compare where I stand in the overall responses. I do not want acesss to others surveys?
    (1D3Y)
Megan Mickelson: @Amanda: I'm sorry if you covered this, but who exactly was surveyed?
    (1D3AA)
Arturo Sanchez: @Megan: see - http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2010_Survey
    (1D3AB)
Megan Mickelson: Thank you Arturo
    (1D3AC)
Amanda Vizedom: @Megan: The link Arturo provided gives intended audience. However, we didn't have an
    (1D3AE)
obvious way to communicate the invitation and motivation to that audience. In fact, we ended up
    (1D3AF)
stepping-out the solicitation in a somewhat ad-hoc way, starting with members of the Ontolog and
    (1D3AG)
Ontology Summit mailing lists and requesting that members help to distribute the solicitation
    (1D3AH)
further. We also asked participants in sessions like this one to provide further suggestions. I
    (1D3AI)
collected those suggestions and others provided in the survey, on the mailing list, or in direct
    (1D3AJ)
communication, and sent email solicitations to those people as well. Finally, I posted the broad
    (1D3AK)
solicitation text on the wiki (as linked on the Surveys main page) in order to have a link to post
    (1D3AL)
in short forms such as Twitter. This I tweeted, in various forms, to hashtags: #ontology,
    (1D3AM)
- linkeddata, #semantic, #semanticweb, #ontologysummit2010, #iswc2009, #tbc09, perhaps others. It got     (1D3AN)
some pickup and ReTweet action, but with more lead time I think we could expect more. I also posted
    (1D3AO)
to the related LinkedIn groups I could find.
    (1D3AP)
Amanda Vizedom: @Megan - That's just the broad sweeps. I also pinged my own professional contacts; I
    (1D3AQ)
expect others did, too.
    (1D3AR)
Megan Mickelson: Thank you, Amanda.
    (1D3AS)
Amanda Vizedom: @Megan, and all: You're welcome. Note that the survey is still open through 11 Mar -
    (1D3AT)
I will do an update before the Symposium. Please feel free to pass along to others you think should
    (1D3AU)
contribute!
    (1D3AV)
Arturo Sanchez: Yes, very good session! We should have more sessions like that!
    (1D3AW)
Steve Ray: @Amanda: It would be good to cross-check slide 16 results with the proposed curriculum.
    (1D3AX)
Steve Ray: @Peter: We need to be careful to distinguish mass understanding from mass appreciation, of
    (1D3AZ)
ontology. The RT Delphi study asked about mass understanding.
    (1D3AAA)
Peter P. Yim: @Steve: fair, point well taken ... that said, I was using "appreciation" in a loose colloquial sense
    (1D3AAB)
(note: it's not on the slide (slide#13)) ... since "appreciation" for mathematics, physics or music takes on
    (1D3AAC)
rather different meanings [this clarification was added subsequently]
    (1D3AAD)
Amanda Vizedom: Addendum to what Peter is saying: much of the European and/or Academic development is
    (1D3AAE)
not addressed to the what I perceive as the largest persistent needs. At ISWC, many of the
    (1D3AAF)
presenters agreed but had no way of getting actual industrial use cases.
    (1D3AAG)
Ravi Sharma: @Amanda: Just to record the Question slightly out of scope but related to Peter's
    (1D3AAH)
Comment, I was wondering if it is possible to filter or project likelihood of decision maker type
    (1D3AAI)
professionals / managers views in support of ontologies, may be we have to do another federal and
    (1D3AAJ)
R&D manager's survey to be able to get an idea of their awareness of power of ontologies to solve
    (1D3AAK)
their problems.
    (1D3AAL)
Amanda Vizedom: Agree with Arturo about opportunity in Health area. Want to add: Transparency and
    (1D3AAM)
Interoperability are also funded priorities in the US now. Not clear to me whether the communication
    (1D3AAN)
path between those with the need and those with the solution is any better.
    (1D3AAO)
Jeremy Arca: Wondering if anyone can recommend some good Ontology development courses that one can take?
    (1D3AAP)
Maria Keet: @amanda: on lack of industry use cases: could it be that industry does not want to shout
    (1D3AAQ)
around they are using ontologies, as competitive advantage?
    (1D3AAR)
Amanda Vizedom: @Maria: possibly, but also many orgs needing semantic solutions are gov and don't
    (1D3AAS)
have good mechanisms for doing so.
    (1D3AAT)
Amanda Vizedom: Recording my comment on the phone:There has been some off-line suggestion that we
    (1D3AAU)
develop mechanisms of gathering info on an ongoing basis. The idea would be to further develop these
    (1D3AAV)
snapshots and create some means of regularly updating them. For future discussion...
    (1D3AAW)
Peter P. Yim: The survey results are accessible from the Survey page at:
    (1D3AAX)
http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OntologySummit2010_Survey (look towards the end of each
    (1D3AAY)
section)
    (1D3AAZ)
Jeremy Arca: There is a Semantic Web Health Care and Life Sciences (HCLS) Interest Group
    (1D3AAAA)
Maria Keet: thanks for conducting and synthesising the survey results! bye
    (1D3AAAE)
Ravi Sharma: @Steve: are there requirements other than NIST ack of participation request.
    (1D3AAAF)
Peter P. Yim: thank you all for participation ... talk to you again next Thu 2010.03.11 at the "Sync-up"
    (1D3AAAH)
virtual session, before we all head toward the Mar 15&16 Symposium
