7) Discussion:

  • Adam: why 8 custodians? (some are extensions of the same upper ontology, I see only 3 main UO's)
    • we need to focus to make sure we aren't just getting a few smart people together to just talk
    • suggest we focus the discussion to the 3 UO's (Cyc, SUMO & DOLCE) on how they can be merged, or if that is not feasible, how we could address the issues ... (Adam: please clean this up ... and express your thoughts at the relevant lists or pages named under 4 above.)
  • Pat: note that this is the 50th anniversary of AI ... they were addressing much broader issues then
  • Steve: ref the 5 points of the UpperOntologySummit/UosConvenerMeeting_2006_03_08/JointCommuniqueDraft, what can we agree to in terms of intent (first 3 points) and document approaches that may be feasible
  • Pat: we may need to be unanimous ... maybe a majority outcome and a minority report is prper too ... we just want to inform the public and be honest with it
  • Nicola: I essentially agree with the first 4 points
  • Michael: point 5 is for us to explore ... we need to investigate, in addition to just expressing opinions
  • John F. Sowa: starting with terms most people alreaday agree with is a good starting point
    • Pat: at a minimum, we should axiomatize to disambiguate
      • Nicola: this point (axiomatization) should come out clearly too
  • some relevant ongoing work has already begun

8) UOS and prep sessions agenda review:

  • UpperOntologySummit/UosConvenerMeeting_2006_03_08/UosConvenerMeeting_2006_03_14
    • Leo: aim to have the (near-final draft) joint communique before us prior to this meeting
      • 3/14 morning - custodians/panelists have a few (max 10 min) minutes each to outline the issues (feasibility, utility, ...) from their perspective with respect to an interrelated-UO, joint communique and beyond
      • 3/14 afternoon - all to review show stoppers and address them
      • 3/14 late afternooon - adopt the final joint communique, discuss next steps
      • 3/14 after the meeting - press interviews
      • 3/14 evening - (no host) dinner together
