SemanticWiki mini-series Background

The Semantic Wiki mini-series a 6-month mini-series comprising Talks, Panel Discussions and Online Discourse. The series is co-organized by FZI Karlsruhe, Mayo Clinic, Ontolog, RPI Tetherless World Constellation and Salzburg Research, Austria. This represents a collaborative effort between members from academia, research, software engineering, semantic web and ontology communities. The 6-month mini-series intends to bring together developers, administrators and users of semantic wikis, and provide a platform where they can conveniently share ideas and insights. Through a series of (mainly virtual) talks, panel discussions, online discourse and even face-to-face meetings, participants will survey the state-of-the-art in semantic wiki technology and get exposure to exemplary use cases and applications. Together, they will study trends, challenges and the outlook for semantic wikis, and explore opportunities for collaboration in the very promising technology, approach or philosophy which people has labeled "semantic wiki."

This series of virtual events will dovetail into the face-to-face workshop: "Social Semantic Web: Where Web 2.0 Meets Web 3.0" at the AAAI Spring Symposium (March 23-25, 2009 at Stanford, California, USA - see: http://tw.rpi.edu/sss09 ).

Session Abstract: Semantic Wiki Applications & Use Cases (1): vertical applications

Semantic wikis have grown beyond their initial use as community-developed web sites to support full applications, often as web portals. Today's session will focus on "vertical" applications specific to a given domain, while Session 5 will focus on "horizontal" applications that are more domain neutral.
The purpose of this session is to showcase some of the domain specific applications that utilize semantic wikis. Our panelists will be presenting applications in the Biomedical Informatics, Healthcare, Mapping and Mathematics domains.

    • Talk-1 (15 min.) "LexWiki - a common model for importing, rendering and proposing revisions to ontology resources in the SemanticMediaWiki"
      • Abstract: We describe why we need a common model of terminological resources in the SemanticMediaWiki. We then briefly describe LexGrid, a model that has been developed to span the terminology / thesaurus / ontology boundaries and how we have implemented it in the SemanticMediaWiki environment.

      • Abstract: This presentation describes how the SemanticMediaWiki and the LexWiki toolkit are being used in the workflow and curation of the Biomedical Grid Terminology ([[BiomedGT]]).
    • Talk-3 (15 min.) "WHO ICD11 Wiki - LexWiki, SemanticMediaWiki and the International Classification of Diseases"
      • Abstract: This presentation describes how the LexWiki based on SemanticMediaWiki is being used for both browsing and authoring support in a World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD) revision project.

    • Talk-4 (15 min.) "Mesh-up Map and Events on Semantic http://c2.com/cgi/wiki? Applications in e-Science and Campus Information System"
      • Abstract: In this talk we share our experience on integrating events and geographical information using the SemanticMediaWiki platform. The TetherlessMap extension is used to present geographical information generated by semantic query. Two applications of the extension will be introduced: 1) the RPI Map project, which displays a

map and lists of integrated campus-based information, e.g., building, events, course and people; 2) the VSTO Map project, which display a map of scientific instruments, e.g. observatory locations and real-time satellite positions.

    • Talk-5 (15 min.) "Semantic Wikis for Mathematics -- a State-of-the-Art Survey"
      • Abstract: Modern mathematical research is supported by computers in many ways, but there

is still a lack of support for (web) collaboration on mathematical knowledge. In this talk, I present a short survey on (more or less) semantic wikis for managing mathematical knowledge. The challenge of agility vs. formal correctness will be of special interest. The talk concludes with an outlook into (inter)active mathematical documents and integrating them with my mathematical semantic wiki SWiM.

    • Professor KeiCheung (Yale) - "Wiki Neuron: A SemanticMediaWiki Prototype in Neuroscience"
      • Abstract: There have been an increasing number of Bio-Wiki projects including Gene Wiki, WikiProteins, WikiPathways, Proteopedia, SNPedia, etc. To expand the Wiki frontier in life sciences, we have created a collaborative and semantically enabled Wiki prototype for the neuroscience domain, which is called "Wiki Neuron" (http://neuroweb3.med.yale.edu/mediawiki/index.php/WikiNeuron). This prototype allows us to explore the benefits of semantic wiki technologies in collective and collaborative neuroscience knowledge acquisition, annotation, and integration. We plan to transform the prototype into a collaboratory by working with the Neuroscience Information Framework (http://nif.nih.gov/) that aims at enhancing neuroscience research by enabling discovery and access to research data and tools.

Harold Solbrig: LexGrid was created to enable a distributed "grid" of terminology resources. It is used as a grid node in the

caBIG project, but it isn't a "grid computing" resource in the classic sense. ... btw, it was originally built using LDAP.

Yaron Koren: Maybe it's worth talking about your workflow-functionality needs on the SMW users mailing list.

Philipp Zaltenbach: Harold: how do you use the SKOS elements within SMW? Do you integrate them with semantic forms or do you let the people

freely annotate article contents with SKOS properties?

Harold Solbrig: Where appropriate, we map the LexWiki to SKOS - the RDF rendering for "comment" is the SKOS equivalent, so it comes out "SKOS".

Harold Solbrig: We are looking forward to the new SKOS release, as it provides better alignment with other resources (DC and OWL)

Yaron Koren: Are you using the "Equivalent URI" property?

Harold Solbrig: Yes, although more in the RDF/SKOS/OWL rendering.

Harold Solbrig: We also need to revise the RDF dump. We're stuck on an old version because the Protege importer is fixed

(this is BiomedGT, btw. ICD11 has more flexibility)

Philipp Zaltenbach: ic, we plan to directly integrate some core elements of SKOS within our next Halo release, in order

to allow people to create and maintain terminologies / thesauri

Christoph Lange: @PeterYim: (y) roughly means "yes, but...", consider e.g. metadata in SlugMath: as it is SMW, it _would_ support metadata,

but it doesn't have any particular metadata vocabulary installed

Christoph Lange: (n) -- e.g. verification in SWiM: the knowledge representation (the OMDoc language) would permit it (with converters

from/to theorem proving languages existing), but the wiki does not yet expose this on the user interface

Christoph Lange: and by y/n i meant "yes in some regard, but no in others", e.g. semantic formulae in ASciencePad:

mostly you enter formulas by their appearance and the system does not understand them, but if you draw a graph or

compute something, the system does interpret a formula

of the wiki and there is the ability to produce semantic functionality in the manner most recently described

JohnMcClure: last question from me ... is there the feeling that a Statement = Wikipage ?

Yaron Koren: Yeah, but I would think XML documents aren't in need of as much annotation as free-form text or image documents.

JohnMcClure: agreed, but I am concerned that that is the wrong model... a Wikipage contains many Statements, but the problem

is that a Statement then is hard to annotate itself
