Agenda & Proceedings

1) Welcome & confirmation of agenda

  • review and adopt agenda

2) Appointment of secretary to take minutes

  • Peter P. Yim volunteered to capture the input from the participants too.

3) Roll-call of participants

  • process: explanation on how this session will be conducted (KurtConrad)
  • Introductions (All) & everyone's expectations (on this session)
    • Kurt Conrad: get back in touch with the community
    • Peter P. Yim: keep us relevant ... reality check
    • Doug Holmes: something concrete and show the rest of the world the "value of ontologies" ... OOR, Ontology Summit, ...
    • Ken Baclawski: scouting for research opprotunities ... OOR
    • Mike Bennett: glad to have found Ontolog ... help get the prorgam going
    • Michelle Raymond: wonderful community and good work ... keep the community and the openness ... tie in standards organizations, collaborative expedition workshop (e.g. follow-up discussions of it) ... build a policy of bi-focating (for projects incubated by Ontolog) to both open and non-open stuff
    • Bob Smith: ... wisdom
    • Harold Solbrig ... Mayo Clinic
    • Duane Nickull ... Adobe
    • Matthew West ... now retired from Shell

4) assess how we are doing in terms of "relevance" and "value to our membership"; future direction and action planning discussion

  • Relevance
    • Mike: Ontolog is doing a great job now ...
    • Ken: a mini-series like "Database and Ontology" was great ... that format can help us attract and involve other communities
    • Michelle: we're doing a lot of things right ... people are getting a lot out of the work ... OOR work, series works (DB, OKMDS, Measure & Quality, ...) were great ... do something that sounds a bit crazy that might become a reality down the road
    • Doug: Ontolog is a very diverse community ... the virtual events have been great ... great presentations, but no discussion on the forum follows
    • Peter: yes, very diverse ... almost disjoint activities and community segments
    • Kurt: huge energy ... definitely sustainable ... almost difficult to define a focus
  • Weakness & Improvements:
    • Doug: things look fine ... will defer on this
    • Mike: background program to help people assess
      • Kurt: ... could be political
    • Mike: tagging the content?
    • Michelle: an "Ontolog dashboard"? ... RSS feed
      • Peter: wiki "Recent Changes" are available as an RSS feed
    • Kurt: digest
    • Ken: student research projects
    • we need tools to help navigate the rich body of knowledge ... but we do have smart data already
      • migration toward purple semantic mediawiki ... the OOR effort will come into play, I'm sure

5) plan events for the next two quarters and beyond

  • "Ontology Showcase" series - co-champion: Ken Baclawski / Mike Bennett
    • ref. Emerging ontological work products showcases - let's do 2 per session, on 3~5 consecutive weeks - first one starting 9/18 or 9/25
      • encourage discussion on [ontolog-forum]
      • feature a closing session to bring everyone back for open discussion
    • [from discussion on 2008.08.28] given that we have yet to receive responses from some of those invited, and at least one (PatCassidy) has indicated interest but wanted to do this later, it is decided that:
      • we will, for now, only run one session on Thu 2008.09.25 - with Martin Hepp, MikeBergman & Mike Bennett
      • we won't need to do the (originally planned) Thu 2008.09.04 planning and coordination meeting for this series any more, for the time being
      • co-champions Ken Baclawski and Mike Bennett will take over from here, to organize the 9/25 session and continue to explore with with potential presenter via email (Ken & Mike, please keep Leo Obrst, Kurt Conrad and Peter P. Yim copied, at least, for overall coordination purposes) and forum dialog
  • Matthew West will continue to explore running some sessions (not as many as before) on the "Database and Ontology" mini-series
    • new developments
    • things we did not cover in the first series (like backend technologies, etc.)
  • Duane Nickull and Kurt Conrad will plan for another "Ontology Implementation and Applications" panel session. Will lock in a date fairly soon, possibly Thu 2008.11.13
    • ref. 2008_11_13 - Thursday: Ontolog Operations Planning & Review - all active community members invited - ConferenceCall_2008_11_13

we got this far on the agenda last week ... will continue the discussion from about here at this session.

  • "Ask the Experts" projecting - co-champion: Kurt Conrad / Bob Smith / SvenVanPoucke(?) - discussion deferred to next week
    • Ken / Kurt suggested: start a page where people can ask questions (to ontology experts)
    • when enough question accumulate and can be clustered, we can feature an "Ask the Experts" type session (which Sven proposed before)
    • Bob / Ken / Mike: be aware that most people don't care about "ontology", or even if they do, they don't call it by that "O" word
  • Scheduled Ontolog Events:

6) review projects, series' and institutional collaborations

7) Follow-up Activities & Action Plan:

8) Next meeting date and adjourn

  • We will continue this discussion next week: Thu 2008.09.04 - refer to details at the session page for ConferenceCall_2008_09_04 closer to the time
  • this planning session adjourned 11:38 am PDT
