Background     (1J)

This "Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision Support (OKMDS)" mini-series is a collaboration between NASA, Ontolog and the (US) Federal Knowledge Management Working Group (KMWG) and is co-organized by a team of individuals from various related communities passionate about creating the opportunity for an inter-community, collaborative exploration of the intersection between Ontology, Knowledge Management and Decision Support, that could eventually lead us toward "Better Decision Making."     (1J1)

The mini-series will span a period of about six months (Nov-2007 to May-2008), during which we will be featuring Talks, Panel Discussions and Online Discourse on pertinent issues. We expect all the talks and panel discussion events to be offered in both 'real world' (augmented conference calls) and 'virtual world' (Second Life) settings.     (1J2)

Refer to details about this mini-series at the OKMDS project homepage at:     (1J3)

Title: Creating Informational and Virtual Space for Knowledge Sharing     (1L)

Abstract: (by JeanneHolm)     (1L1)

The use of knowledge management processes and technologies has been underway for some time--but does it really make a difference? How does access to the right information at the right time lead to better decisions by government executives on policy, implementations, and public safety? How can your organization's knowledge management resources be brought to bear on the core issues facing your employees and executives?     (1L2)
Join us for this discussion as we learn about two ends of the KM spectrum from the FAA and Nuclear Regulatory Commission looking at how a KM system and storytelling have helped the government personnel and the public to make better decisions.     (1L3)

[Mr. Giora Hadar] [Dr. Michael Kull]     (1L4B)

Giora Hadar is a knowledge architect with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He has been working in knowledge management (KM) since 1995 and in his current position since June 1999. Mr. Hadar developed and managed internal and external KM Web sites that house internal communications, stories, a glossary, news, and events. He authored the KM strategic plan for the FAA as well as a change management plan and requirements documents for a KM portal, expertise locator, and an on-line collaborative environment.     (1L4C)
After the FAA sent Giora on a detail to two other government agencies to transfer his tacit knowledge, he returned to the FAA where he currently develops and implements a collaborative workplace for the Air Traffic Organization, the largest line of business within the agency. Giora also serves as a KM consultant within the FAA and is frequently called up to consult to other government agencies. ... more     (1L4D)
Michael D. Kull, Ph.D. currently leads KM efforts at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, recently ranked by an OPM-sponsored survey as #1 in KM and Leadership and #1 Best Place to Work in the Federal Government. He is also President of AMPLIFI, a management and social media consulting and services company. His academic research has revolved around knowledge management, organizational learning, leadership and innovation, organizational storytelling and cultural narratives, and the creative expression of ideas through digital media and social networking tools. He is on the Board of the KM Institute and currently co-chairs the intergovernmental KM working group. ... more     (1L4E)
