Use of Semantic Web Technology to Combat the Covid-19 Pandemic
This presentation is a summary of a chapter I wrote with Biswanath Dutta to be published in a book on Semantic Web technology. We describe our survey of semantic web technology that was utilized to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. We focused on technology that utilized actual data and/or was utilized by actual users, mostly healthcare workers but in some cases the general public. The categories of applications were:
Clinical Trials: Assisting researchers in finding and analyzing papers and data on clinical trials for Covid-19 and related drugs.
Data Analysis: Various types of data analysis. E.g., for epidemiological data (CODO).
Drug Repurposing: Identifying drugs that are currently used to treat other diseases and may help combat the Covid-19 virus.
Harmonization: Integration of the many heterogenous healthcare models such as SNOMED CT, HL7 FYRE, LOINC, ICD,...
Semantic Search: Searching tools for papers related to the pandemic based on knowledge graphs and semantics rather than just keywords.
Statistics: Using Semantic technology to present statistics (e.g., number of people infected, deaths, length of illness) according to regions and time spans.
Surveillance: Monitoring patients using Internet of Things (IoT) architectures in hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities.
Vocabularies: Providing vocabulary ontologies (e.g., of the Covid virus: CIDO) for use by other systems.
