Ursula R. Kattner received her Diploma in Mineralogy and her Ph.D. in Metallurgy from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1979 and 1982, respectively. After graduation she worked at the Powder Metallurgical Laboratory of the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart as a research scientist. She joined the Metallurgy Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (then National Bureau of Standards) in Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA, in 1985 first as a guest scientist and later as a physical scientist. Her research initially concentrated on the experimental determination of phase diagrams but migrated to computational thermodynamics and software development. Her present research interests are thermodynamics and phase equilibria, computational thermodynamics employing the CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) method, development of thermodynamic databases for multi-component multi-phase systems, and the coupling of phase equilibria calculations with process simulation tools.
She was an invited participant at the Ringberg Workshop series, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2005, organized by the Scientific Group Thermodata Europe (SGTE) and the Max-Planck-Institute for Metals Research in Germany, which resulted in the publication of valuable guides for thermodynamic modeling for the scientific community. She has received numerous awards, including the US Department of Commerce Gold Medal Award, and was elected Fellow of ASM International in 2003. She has authored and co-authored more than 80 papers and book chapters.
