Discussion Way Point 1

Mission Draft Idea:

  • Connecting information resources for building service performance. Defining how to describe the performance requirements to develop simple ontologies and code/classification templates.

For example:

  • In emergency response there could be a need to "Shut Down Air Handler 2" to control a fire - how does the building model or fire department know what kind of air handler it is, where it is located or what impact this will have on the other air handlers right now this minute? How do you find this information in the construction documents and whatever public records and building controls the fire department can access? How do these documents vary from the actual facility? What data should have priority to be accurate within certain limitation and easily translated? What parts of the information need to be accessed in simple ways by Owners, the Rotary Club, Fire Stations and others who do not understand complex building information but may need to quickly find answers for particular needs?
  • BobSmith has provided a list of current sustainable design issues and evaluation criteria in California. For example trying to settle a stalemate over water rights by a certain road using GIS, with building models, with population studies, with, with, with, with... the potential information goes on and on. In some cases, the purpose of combining and processing large volumes of disparate data together is to separate fact from fiction to establish and present consensus, or necessary, positions on controversial issues. Many contemporary issues are so emotionally and locally driven that finding answers and reaching solutions needs help from larger knowledge networks and technologies. How are these connected?
