Mark Palmer is a project manager at the Building and Fire Research Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Mr. Palmer conducts research on the integration of information technology, automation and work process optimization to improve engineering, manufacturing and construction. Mr. Palmer is active in national and international standards development activities and numerous industry organizations. This has included leading collaboration projects on information modeling and systems interoperability and cross-industry, information standards projects.

Currently, Mr. Palmer leads two projects for the NIST Systems Integration for Manufacturing Applications program: “Interoperability Standards for Capital Facilities Equipment” and “eBusiness Standards Convergence” and coordinates these projects with the BFRL Construction Integration and Automation Technology program. He chairs the eBusiness Standards Convergence Forum and the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to UN/CEFACT, and he is a vice-chair for UN/CEFACT (United Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business). He is also the project manager for the FIATECH Automating Equipment Information Exchange (AEX) Project and one of the leaders of the development of the Capital Projects Technology Roadmap.

Prior to joining NIST, Mr. Palmer spent 14 years in the engineering and construction of commercial, industrial and residential facilities. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon. His Master of Science degree is from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he specialized in the integration of CAD/CAE systems, knowledge systems, and quality management principles.
