I am Samer Sharani, PhD candidate in political science at Sabancı University, Istanbul, Turkey. I have worked on Ontology Engineering since 2018 and tried to apply it in political and social sciences as (1) a method of logical modeling and (2) a method of database building that links abstract sciences to reality for developmental purposes. I study the fields of peacebuilding, civil war, refugee studies, and ontological security. Each one of these fields is very vast. Although academic research and publication are very advanced, detailed, and cover a wide array of concepts, theories, and geographies, it is difficult to benefit from such advancement. Ontology Engineering (or knowledge graphs) offers a great means to synthesize the literature and organize or model it in a way easing the communication between academics and policy-makers (including NGOs), on the one hand, and between academics themselves, on the other. I am working on this gap. In 2023, I participated with my co-authors in the International Workshop on Ontologies for Services and Society (OSS2023) with a paper on refugee ontology, which was my first publication on ontology.
