Jack Hodges is a Senior Research Scientist in the Siemens Web of Things group in Berkeley, where he researches information modeling and interoperability in application domains such as factory automation, vertical integration, machine-to-machine interactions, and human-robot collaboration, as well as their practical application. A common theme of his work is the use of ontologies and formal representations to ensure unambiguous definitions of terms and relations. He has been involved in conceptual modeling for over 30 years. Between 2006 and 2012 he worked at NASA Ames on various information modeling projects, pertaining mostly to command and telemetry models and interoperability between systems and organizational entities within the NASA community. He contributed to the Quantities, Units, Dimensions and Datatypes (QUDT) ontology and serves on the QUDT.org board. Jack was member of the faculty and coordinated the Artificial Intelligence specialization at San Francisco State University from 1990-2000. He received his Ph.D. in Engineering at UCLA in 1993, where he studied mechanical invention and creative problem solving in engineering. He received his Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1978 from the University of Michigan, and his Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1976.

'''IAOA Semantic Web Applied Ontology (SWAO) SIG'''

Meetings are normally on the first Monday of the month at these times.

[[ConnectionDetails]]

== Agenda ==

* Housekeeping
** Wiki indexing / query functionality (only seems to list up to Dec 2014 still)
** Publicizing the blog - see http://iaoaswao.blogspot.co.uk/
** Follow-up on last month's discussion about linking to IAOA URL structure
** Idea about creating a "Stack Overflow" type of page for Ontology

* Issue of the Journal of Applied Ontology
** Status update - we now have the details for this
** Next actions
*** We did not manage to discuss this at the January meeting
*** This will be the main focus of today's meeting.

* Standing agenda items (as tome allows)...

* Tutorial / training material and media
** White paper for business people
** Introductory online/training tutorial
*** Feedback from Education Committee
*** "Gentle introduction to ontologies" – availability
** Book - continue discussion / where were we on this?

* Consensus Building
** Role for this SIG to maintain a kind of wiki resource which identifies consensus, references.
*** This would be a role for the "Stack Overflow" idea noted above
** Existing resources we would want to collate and promote
** Should we aim to maintain a library?
** Knowledge base and list of knowledgeable individuals, and understand current work, projects and interests

* Membership, recruitment etc.
** Things we can do now the infrastructure is sorted out
** Brainstorm and share information about people and projects relevant to this SIG
*** Linked Data
*** Big Data
*** Terminology and related science
*** Internet of Things
*** Cognitive Computing
** Reach out them to make them aware of our existence
** Maybe invite them for a talk or an informal chat

* AOB

* Next Meeting
