** the OpenOntologyRepository wiki homepage has yet to be populated - Peter P. Yim
** populate - OOR/ActiveMemberContribution

* Outstanding Issue review/update: (from last call)
** consider requirement - think of scope and staging  <-- to be discussed today
** create a wiki page and a mailing list - Peter  (--partially done/ppy)
** will be subscribing all to [ontolog-forum] and the new [oor-forum] lists  (--done/ppy)

* Discussions:
* Logistics and Communications
** given a similar theme: what/when do we discuss at the [ontology-summit] vs. [oor-forum] (and their respective settings)?
** For Ontology Summit 2008 - for online discourse - a discussion group; for more academic issues; ends with the workshop;
** For OOR work - a working group; to develop a repository; will continue beyond the summit;
*** suggest members only propose something they can make happen and will champion;

* consider requirement - think of scope and staging
*
** Leo Obrst: "definition: registry vs. repository; goals" - http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum/oor-forum/2008-01/msg00016.html
** Bruce: XMDR (based on ISO 11179) on about managing data; not exactly for ontology quite yet; there is open source software for download (based on bsd license)
*** on Mike's request, Bruce responded that he will be happy to present on the work at a later meeting

*
*
** Adopting the following definition for the OOR initiative:
** Peter: suggest we organize a session when we can have all the major players on a panel, introduce us to their work, and their allow an open discussion for all to explore how we can align everyone's efforts.
*** a registry is defined to be a data structure where data, metadata, knowledge or semantic objects are listed as being available, along with who placed them there, and their conditions of use.
*** Mike & All: agreed ... Peter will go ahead to organize that date: Thu 28-Feb-2008; 2 Hours starting 10:30am PST / 1:30pm EST
*** A repository is a data structure where data, metadata, knowledge or semantic objects and related artifacts are placed, and can be accessed from; typically repositories include management software.

**** for reference: A registry therefore can be considered a portion of a repository, a listing or table of contents for the repository, rather than the entire contents of the repository (which repository can be either centralized or distributed). A simple example of a registry is the Windows Registry, which is a listing or table of installed programs, rather than the entire set of programs themselves and their data.
* Discussions:

*
* Resources and Funding:
** our (the OOR initiative) focus will be on the repository.
** Ravi: clarifying between registry and the registering process
** John: clarifying between register and registry
** Anders: there are also registry servcies and repository services
** Steve: ref. DavidWeinberger's "Everything is Miscellaneous" - repository is where we find the stuff, and registry contains information about that stuff
** we want: repository <-> storage ... registry <-> indices
** Steve: while separate notions, intelligent repositories will have a registry for performance reasons

*
*
** Ravi's suggestion:
** OOR/ActiveMemberContribution
*** Repository is a database or datawarehouse where ontology information and artifacts including executables and software components and objects are stored.
*** Registry is both a mechanism to represent metadata about the contents of repository as well as a representation of public and private access and membership lists etc.
*** Both registries and repositories can be distributed and federated.

*
*
** Steve's suggestion:
** Funding
*** A repository is a storage facility where ontology information and artifacts including executables and software components and objects can be found.
*** possibilities - government agencies (NSF?, NIST?, whoever would fund open infrastructure, DARPA, IARPA (Jeff), ... etc.); EU funders; Vulcan (Mark)?; bring in W3C in a exploratory (XG) working group (e.g. Semantic Web Deployment) (although they are a funding sink rather than a funding source; but good for visibility);
*** A registry is an index that organizes and directs the user to information stored in a repository.
*** getting organized - consider forming a sub-committee
**** we need to get a proposal together regardless - Bruce: interested to see how we could integrate the various efforts into the proposal
**** we'll discuss this over the forum a bit more, and try to come to closure by the next meeting
** before funding is in place, work will be on volunteered basis

* Adopting: "An ontology repository is a facility where ontologies and related information artifacts can be stored, retrieved and managed."
* Use Cases & Requirements < -- deferred to next call
** not concluded ... fairly close already, we'll carry this on on the list
** soliciting 'early adopter' partners who can offer up their ontologies, help refine requirements, and provide user feedback.

* see also discussion on the chat session below
* Organization & Process < -- deferred to next call

** relationship to Ontolog? sponsors? funders?

* organization
* Deliverables:
** relationship to Ontolog? <-- deferred discussion to the next meeting
** target something we can "show" from this OOR effort at the Ontology Summit 2008 workshop
** Peter P. Yim: take inventory of what everyone is bringing to the table
** Peter / Mike: let's try to hash this out on [oor-forum]
*** Peter will start a wiki page for that and let every know on the list
*** Everyone is encouraged to post to the list what they will be bringing to the table with links to the work (this will make initial content that could populate that page.)

* Process and Deliverables:
** Steve Ray: now that OOR is adopted as the main theme for Ontology Summit 2008, how do we coordinate and leverage that effort (and avoid duplications)
** Mike: Ontology Summit 2008 would definitely help bootstrap the OOR effort

Peter P. Yim: Welcome to: Founding Members Meeting of the OpenOntologyRepository (OOR) Initiative - Wed 2008.01.23

anonymous morphed into Lee Feigenbaum

Ravi Sharma: what is he broad agenda?

JohnGraybeal1: Ravi, it is here:http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?OOR/ConferenceCall_2008_01_23

JohnGraybeal1: The assumption of a distributed system as the primary (?) solution merits further discussion,

but I don't think it affects the definition.

Ravi Sharma: location could be virtual and is only importnt for infrastructure and architecture such as

distributed for eficiency etc.

Ravi Sharma: Repository is a database or datawarehouse where ontology information and artifacts including

executables and software components and objects are stored.

Ravi Sharma: Registry is both a mechanism to represent metadata about the contents of repository as well as

a representation of public and private access and membership lists etc.

Ravi Sharma: Both registries and repositories can be distributed and federated.

anonymous morphed into Anders W. Tell

Steve Ray: How about: A repository is a storage facility where ontology information and artifacts

including executables and software components and objects can be found.

Steve Ray: Then, a registry is an index that organizes and directs the user to information stored in

a repository.

Ken Baclawski: Are registries and repositories separate notions or does a repository necessarily include

a registry?

John Graybeal: How critical are the words 'including executables and software components and objects"?

It raises a question for me about what they are doing in the registry.

Ravi Sharma: artifacts and information elements are ok

Ravi Sharma: services are ok

Steve Ray: A repository is a storage facility where information artifacts can be found.

Steve Ray: An ontology repository is a storage facility where ontologies and related information artifacts

can be stored, retrieved and managed.

Steve Ray: An ontology repository is a facility where ontologies and related information artifacts can be

stored, retrieved and managed.

Steve Ray: For the future: A registry is an index that organizes and directs the user to objects found in

a repository.

John Graybeal: To clarify for the minutes, let me introduce here (no comment needed at this time) the two

clarifying definitions I mentioned earlier. (I think these come from ISO 19135 but can't swear to that.)

John Graybeal: Register: database of the items being registered.

Anders Tell: Reference to existing and important work: <http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=regrep>

John Graybeal: Registry: information system on which a register is maintained; facilitates accessibility and

storage for the registry. (I assume this means the computer(s) and operating system(s).)

Ravi Sharma: The link provided by Anders is very relevant illustration from W3c and ebXML site.

    • given a similar theme: what/when do we discuss at the [ontology-summit] vs. [oor-forum] (and their respective settings)?
    • For Ontology Summit 2008 - for online discourse - a discussion group; for more academic issues; ends with the workshop;
    • For OOR work - a working group; to develop a repository; will continue beyond the summit;
      • suggest members only propose something they can make happen and will champion;
    • Bruce: XMDR (based on ISO 11179) on about managing data; not exactly for ontology quite yet; there is open source software for download (based on bsd license)
      • on Mike's request, Bruce responded that he will be happy to present on the work at a later meeting
    • Peter: suggest we organize a session when we can have all the major players on a panel, introduce us to their work, and their allow an open discussion for all to explore how we can align everyone's efforts.
      • Mike & All: agreed ... Peter will go ahead to organize that date: Thu 28-Feb-2008; 2 Hours starting 10:30am PST / 1:30pm EST
  • Discussions:
  • Resources and Funding:
    • Funding
      • possibilities - government agencies (NSF?, NIST?, whoever would fund open infrastructure, DARPA, IARPA (Jeff), ... etc.); EU funders; Vulcan (Mark)?; bring in W3C in a exploratory (XG) working group (e.g. Semantic Web Deployment) (although they are a funding sink rather than a funding source; but good for visibility);
      • getting organized - consider forming a sub-committee
        • we need to get a proposal together regardless - Bruce: interested to see how we could integrate the various efforts into the proposal
        • we'll discuss this over the forum a bit more, and try to come to closure by the next meeting
    • before funding is in place, work will be on volunteered basis
  • Use Cases & Requirements < -- deferred to next call
    • soliciting 'early adopter' partners who can offer up their ontologies, help refine requirements, and provide user feedback.
  • Organization & Process < -- deferred to next call
    • how shall we organize ourselves? ... sub-workgroups? how many?
    • relationship to Ontolog? sponsors? funders?
  • Deliverables:
    • target something we can "show" from this OOR effort at the Ontology Summit 2008 workshop
    • Peter / Mike: let's try to hash this out on [oor-forum]
