Emerging Ontology Showcase

Agenda

  • Subject: Context, Perspective, and Generalities in a Knowledge Ontology

Abstract:

  • KBpedia is a recently announced knowledge structure that integrates six major knowledge bases (OpenCyc, Wikipedia, Wikidata, GeoNames, DBpedia, UMBEL) under the KBpedia Knowledge Ontology (KKO). KBpedia's explicit purpose is to provide a foundation for knowledge-based artificial intelligence by supporting the (nearly) automatic creation of training corpuses and positive and negative training sets and feature sets for deep, unsupervised and supervised machine learning. KKO is the upper ontology for KBpedia, and is guided by the universal categories (Firstness, Secondness, Thirdness) of Charles S. Peirce. In this forum, one of KBpedia's co-developers, Mike Bergman, will discuss what KBpedia is, how it is organized and constructed, and why KKO offers some new approaches to vexing metaphysical questions in ontology design related to the knowledge representation of entities, relations, attributes, concepts, and natural kinds. The discussion period will hopefully highlight next potentials and important open questions.

Proceedings

[12:39] LeoObrst: Welcome, everyone. Today's speaker is Mike Bergman, talking on "Context, Perspective, and Generalities in a Knowledge Ontology".

[13:33] anonymous: Great, thanks Leo!

[13:33] AlexShkotin: Mike, what should I do integrate my ontology with KBpedia?

[13:38] AlexShkotin: what kind of ontology language I can use for my ontology? Like CASL, CL...

[13:40] AlexShkotin: ...RDF, RDFS...

[13:40] AlexShkotin: UML...

[13:40] Frederick Giasson: Alex: here is a writeup about the process of building KBpedia which includes external ontologies mappings. So as Mike pointed out, what I presented is what we did to do the actual linkage. But once done and and reviewed by an ontologist, the linkage gets added to that pipeline and coherency is checked at the same time: http://fgiasson.com/blog/index.php/2016/11/07/building-and-maintaining-the-kbpedia-knowledge-graph/

[13:43] Frederick Giasson: Theorically it is a RDF/RDFS/OWL World. However, the linkage could be done to IRIs that refers entities defined in something else than RDF/RDFS/OWL, however the system that would leverage the linkage would need to be aware of the language used to describe your ontology to do whatever it has to do

[13:43] AlexShkotin: @Frederick, thanks, and answer about onto-languages should be short ;-)

[13:44] AlexShkotin: OK

[13:44] Frederick Giasson: For the linkage between an external source to KBpedia can be done using any kind of input document (OWL, CSV, RDBMS table, Triple Store, etc... anything not supported can be interfaced and added)

[13:46] TerryLongstreth: Transfer from Hand Raising window: "Where would I find generally-accepted evidence (e.g., logic proof) that Wikipedia has inconsistent and incoherent categories?"

[13:52] LeoObrst: How do you handle dynamicity, i.e., periodically (constantly?) remapping KR resources?

[13:53] AlexShkotin: OWL2 is not too expressive to keep any knowledge. so you have classifier basically? do you use linear equation extension?

[13:54] Frederick Giasson: Alex: I am not sure I fully understand the question here

[14:03] AlexShkotin: do you have SPARQL end point?

[14:04] Frederick Giasson: Alex: KBpedia is *not* currently opensource, so it is only available (via SPARQL endpoint or other means) to our clients

[14:05] AlexShkotin: OK

[14:05] AlexShkotin: great project!

[14:06] Frederick Giasson: Thanks!

[14:07] LeoObrst: Thanks, All!
