Abstract

The Semantics of Things that Happen - Some Suggestions from FIBO

The Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO) is built on the premise that all concepts are well grounded in reality rather than data, for example the realities of contracts, accounting concepts and other real world concerns. These in turn are framed within a set of under-specified upper ontology partitions. In order to capture the basic semantics of events and processes, such as corporate events and securities issuance processes, this initiative includes a pair of partitions for continuant and occurrent things (also comparable to endurant and perdurant things). In this session the FIBO team will present some recent exploratory work on further extensions of the occurrent partition of the FIBO future foundational models. These are intended to provide a more precise framing for concepts relating to business processes, events, activities, interest accruals and so on.

[18:10] Matthew West: Slide 44: So if an occurant has to be defined relative to time, how can you have something - say like a murder - when you don't know when it happened.

[18:11] Mark H Linehan: Sometimes we assign identity to an event, for example "transaction identity". Presumably that doesn't make a transaction into a continuant...?

[18:14] Mark H Linehan: Mass objects - e.g. water, sand, oil, do not have identity. Presumably they are continuants despite the lack of identity....

[18:17] Gary Berg-Cross: REA stands for resources, events, agent as noted in the QUEUE.

[18:21] Gary Berg-Cross: On this topic of faceted classification see Andrew Franks Distinctions Produce a Taxonomic Lattice, FOIS, 2006

[18:24] Matthew West: Slide 62. It might be better to say intentional rather than purposeful (it is the word you used and is arguably clearer).

[18:25] Gary Berg-Cross: taking this functional idea we might say that a hand is more than a simple part but is a functionalcomponent within a system that functions.

[18:32] Gary Berg-Cross: I think that DOLCE would talk about state of redness, the state of default as qualities.

[18:32] Matthew West: Slide 71: I would think of redness as a class rather than a continuant.

[18:37] Matthew West: Slide 72: This is questionable.

[18:37] Andrea Westerinen: Mike, How will you use these facets in FIBO, other than for classification/clarification?

[18:39] Bobbin Teegarden: Aren't all things relative things? Is there an 'absolute' thing? If all things are relative, then would both continuant and occurent things be subclasses?

[18:39] Terry Longstreth: other facets of prescriptive seem to me to be intended/expected vs unintended/unexpected. Did the group examine considerations of happenstance?

[18:43] Gary Berg-Cross: @Terry (13:39) I think that their idea of Non Purposeful Occurrent (Slide 72) is a happenstance. But they don't have an example of it in the slide.

[18:44] Christof Hasse: in my opinion state is independent. It's the goal of someone that is relative "pointing" to a state.
