NASA-Ontolog-KMWG OKMDS mini-series Launch Meeting - Thu 08-Nov-2007

  • Title: Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision Support (OKMDS): Making Better Decisions

Background

This "Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision Support (OKMDS)" mini-series is a collaboration between NASA, Ontolog and the Federal Knowledge Management Working Group (KMWG) and is co-organized by a team of individuals from various related communities passionate about creating the opportunity for an inter-community, collaborative exploration of the intersection between Ontology, Knowledge Management and Decision Support, that could eventually lead us toward "Better Decision Making."

The mini-series will span a period of about six months (Nov-2007 to May-2008), during which we will be featuring Talks, Panel Discussions and Online Discourse on pertinent issues. We expect all the talks and panel discussion events to be offered in both 'real world' (augmented conference calls) and 'virtual world' (Second Life) settings.

Title: Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision Support (OKMDS): Making Better Decisions

Abstract

This "Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision Support (OKMDS)" mini-series is a collaboration between NASA, Ontolog, and the Federal Knowledge Management Working Group and is co-organized by a team of individuals from various related communities passionate about creating the opportunity for an inter-community, collaborative exploration of the intersection between Ontology, Knowledge Management and Decision Support, that could eventually lead us toward "Better Decision Making". This presentation covers the NASA challenge, existing services and infrastructure, integration activities for interoperability for decision support, and a roadmap for future integration of ontologies, enterprise architecture, knowledge management, and data services.

AndrewSchain ... I started my IT career almost 25 years ago writing programs for

science and business applications. Since then I have designed, built and operated networks, managed a data center, lead multi-scaled geographically dispersed projects, implemented service architectures, and provided technology forecasting. I joined NASA as a civil servant 17 years ago. For the last 10 years, I have had the responsibility for introducing new technologies into the NASA Headquarters computing environment and for integrating the Headquarters IT infrastructure and services with other NASA centers and partners. I am currently the HQ's Chief Technology Officer and serve as the lead for the Headquarters IT Strategic and Tactical plans which set goals and provide integrated planning for NASA Headquarters IT services. Since December 2006, I am also the acting Chief of the Applications and IT Security Branch. I am still a visiting researcher at the Maryland Information and Network Dynamics Laboratory, part of the UMD Advanced Computer Studies Department. My field of interest is in applied information integration strategies.

JeanneHolm ... is the Chief Knowledge Architect at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. Ms. Holm leads NASA's Knowledge Management Team, which helps to gather, provide access to, and reuse the knowledge gathered over the many missions of the US space agency to support future missions and to help drive innovation. Her projects include the NASA Portal (http://www.nasa.gov), [[InsideNASA]], the NASA Engineering Network (http://nen.nasa.gov), and many others. Ms. Holm chairs a group for the United Nations in the international aerospace community setting standards for how space missions should manage knowledge in the future. She is on the leadership board for the US Federal Knowledge Management Working Group.
