    • other suggestions:
      • a panel with speaker representating: SUMO, OpenCyc Upper Ontology, DOLCE, ... (suggested by PeterYim)
        • possibly teaming up with SICoP and their CUO-WG; after independent sessions on Cyc and DOLCE
      • Monica: suggest inviting someone from the [regrep] group
      • Jon Bosak of Sun on OASIS Process - suggested (KurtConrad / SusanTurnbull) at our 2005.03.03 Planning Session - Susan: the 2005.09.23 CEW on implication on governance ... would be ideal. [Kurt will follow up with Jon and Susan]
        • possibility of this rolling into a joint SICoP or CEW-multiple CoP Best Practice event (suggested: Susan Turnbull / 2005.03.03)
  • Scheduled Discussions for the next 2 months
    • June 2005 - Service Sciences - Moderator: BillMcCarthy - Thursday ConferenceCall_2005_06_30
    • see: Ontolog Discussion
    • David: maybe we should designate a moderator, and then coordinate the event from there, in a fashion similar to speaker events.
    • more work/discussion on OWL
      • Adam: need OWL & SWRL for OWL ontologies to really be useful
    • Nicolas Rouquette has a couple of topics lined up too ... we'll talk about those when he is at the call.
    • Rex: possibility of working with Duane on a follow-up

5) Communications, logistics, & work protocols issues

  • Regular call time revisited:
    • received one more input lately - from Steve Ray:
      • Steve: "...if you held your regular Ontolog sessions on any of Monday, Tuesday or Friday afternoons, I would be a regular attendee. (Of course I can't promise attendance for every meeting, but it works much better for my schedule). ..."
      • Evan Wallace request we defers the assessment until end June (to see what W3C-SWBPD comes up with for their egualr call schedule). Therefore, input still welcomed, encourage d and appreciated.

6) Follow-ups from previous calls

7) Current Project Status Report

  • NHIN Response Summary report and Ontolog's impacts
    • The 80 page report is available at http://www.hhs.gov/healthit/rfisummaryreport.pdf
    • The contents and the project to summarize the contents are noteworthy
      • Questions asked and Answers: tool assessment (Content Analyst and FAST)
        • Opportunities for improved tools and methodologies?
      • How might this Ontolog Community support the resulting 4 RFPs issued yesterday? - ref: http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum//health-ont/2005-06/msg00002.html
        • 1. Standards harmonization: a single award contract to develop, test, and evaluate a feasible prototype standards harmonization process.
        • 2. Certification: a single award contract to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of a compliance certification and inspection process for EHRs.
        • 3. Prototypes for an Internet-based NHIN Architecture: six awards for prototypes of Internet-based interoperable NHIN architectures. Prototypes must be able to function in real-world settings in a non-proprietary fashion.
        • 4. Privacy and Security Solutions for Health Data Exchange: a single contract with up to 40 subcontracts with designees of state or territorial governments to review state and local interpretations of privacy and security regulations to determine challenges and possible solutions for achieving smoother transmission of healthcare data.
        • Bob: interestingly enough, these 4 RFP's will be funded
          • can pose questions ref. these RFP's before end next week
          • form alliances
        • Kurt: integration and harmonization seems most relevant. Scope is larger than what we can handle, though. We will need to partner with someone else.
        • Bo: could we go in and propose to be on an advisory role to the program office, rather than competing with everyone else on the RFPs?
      • Pat: maybe we could someone (Brand, for example) closer to the NHIN people, why ontologies did not show up much in the RFI summary or the RFP.
        • Brand: hopefully with the 6/13 presentations (and key people from Dr. Brailer's office in the audience) and Marc Wine's new post at GSA, things may turn our way yet.
        • Kurt / Duane: the "O" word is still a difficult one to spread
        • Bo: maybe we should be less worry about the "O" word, and focus on getting the correct "O" behavior from these people
        • Duane: we can gently remind people that ontologies are there, whether they document it or not
        • Bob asked Brand whether that would be feasible - Brand responded by saying that he is not in position to answer that kind of question as the issue is already in procurement.
    • Brand mentions that all 500+ RFI responses are now public
      • stay focus on people who responded to the RFI
    • Brand: note - Federal Systems vs. Personal Health Record System - (on the latter, ref: Esther Dyson's recent publications - http://weblog.edventure.com/)
  • Nhin Rfi Co-Convener's call of 2005 05 31
    • Mark Musen, Brand Niemann, Peter P. Yim, Bob Smith
    • Summary and Status
      • FEA-RMO
      • OWL Ontology for ISO 11179
      • Ontolog response to UDEF White Paper
      • SIA Pilots and SICoP session June 13

8) project work session / discussion

  • Discussion of a short list of Sponsor Needs
    • VA's IT Congressional Funding Request and SEI "Project Taxonomy"
    • SICoP Pilot Study with Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
    • ONCHIT Interests in working with Ontolog
  • Project Management Challenges and Suggestions
    • TBD
  • Action:
    • need small team of volunteers to do the follow-up and continued exploration
    • Kurt: getting hooked up with people who already have traction in the process (the Esther Dysons of the world) would probably be a good approach for us.
      • given that we do not have the infrastructure and governance to do operations
    • Bo: yes ... we should maintain Ontolog as an open CoP; but allow mentions to gain opportunities through participation
      • Peter: ditto

9) New project proposals

10) Sponsorship and funding

11) Other business

12) Next meeting date and adjourn

  • call adjourned 11:54am PDT
  • next call will be on Thu 2005.06.16 starting at 10:30am PDT - Invited Speaker session with David Whitten and ChrisRichardson from WorldVistA
