Alessandro Mosca

I am currently Assistant Professor at the Computer Science Faculty of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, and I'm a member of the KRDB Research Centre (https://www.inf.unibz.it/krdb/) and of the Smart Data Factory (https://smart.inf.unibz.it/en/), the technology transfer lab of the faculty.

My research activity focuses on knowledge representation and conceptual modelling for data management. I'm interested in the theoretical and methodological aspects behind the creation of ontology-based data management solutions. Multi-format data integration and access, efficient ontology-based query answering, formal semantics of conceptual modelling languages, temporal and multidimensional data representation, SPARQL querying support systems, data exploration techniques for non-technical users are among the topics I work on.

I contributed to the design of applications that are fed by (open and legacy) data in the so-called Research and Innovation ecosystem (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/http://www.inf.unibz.it/~almosca/papers/JOWO-2017_AM.pdf). The Open Data platform called UNiCS (https://unics.cloud/) is probably the most evident result of my attempt to apply the ontology-based approach for semantic data integration in this scenario. The Toscana Open Research, Regional Research and Innovation Observatory (https://www.toscanaopenresearch.it/en/) is another living example along the same line.

My research career has been always characterised by a strong degree of interdisciplinarity: I like to build linguistic and conceptual bridges between different disciplines. This attitude gave me the opportunity to directly work with domain knowledge corpora by chemical engineers (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/http://www.inf.unibz.it/~almosca/papers/ban_mos_pal_ModelBasedCompoundFormulation_PROOFvERSION.pdf), Roman Empire historians (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/http://www.inf.unibz.it/~almosca/papers/calv-etal-EAAI-2016.pdf), policy makers (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://ceur-ws.org/Vol-2050/DAO_paper_4.pdf), mechanical artefact designers (chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/http://www.inf.unibz.it/~almosca/papers/colombo2007.pdf), among others. The idea of using the principles and technologies of Knowledge Representation to allow the cross-domain interchange of meanings is surely one of the most relevant driving engine of my research activity.

I'm a member of the Editorial Board of the Applied Ontology journal, and since 2015 I contribute to the organisation of the Semantic Web and Ontology Design for Cultural Heritage (SWODCH), a scientific event that, year after year has witnessed the growth around it of a robust and nowadays consolidated community of both theoreticians and practitioners.
