Gavin has an M.A. in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge and is currently Vice President of Research for Vertical Search Works. He has experience in semantic search (Convera, Vertical Search Works), artificial intelligence ([[Cycorp]]), memory management and garbage collection (Harlequin, Ravenbrook, Geodesic Systems), and CAD/CAM (EDS, Unigraphics, Shape Data).

[http://www.verticalsearchworks.com/ Vertical Search Works] maintains and develops the Excalibur semantic web search engine. Semantic and linguistic processing of web pages provides vertical search and context-sensitive advert placement. Behind the scenes, Excalibur relies on a large scale WordNet-style general ontology, extended for the various verticals that are supported. This is used to latch and disambiguate concepts within unstructured natural language text.
