The [[OntologySummit|Ontology Summit]] is an annual series of events that involves the ontology community and communities related to each year's theme chosen for the summit. The Ontology Summit was started by Ontolog and NIST, and the program has been co-organized by Ontolog and NIST along with the co-sponsorship of other organizations that are supportive of the Summit goals and objectives.

As part of Ontolog’s general advocacy to bring ontology science and related engineering into the mainstream, we endeavor to facilitate discussion and knowledge sharing amongst stakeholders and interested parties relevant to the use of ontologies. The results will be synthesized and summarized in the form of the Ontology Summit 2026 Communiqué, with expanded supporting material provided on the web and in journal articles.

= Process and Deliverables =
The [[OntologySummit2026|Ontology Summit 2026]] will consist of virtual discourse (over our archived mailing lists), virtual presentations and panel sessions as part of recorded video conference calls.
As in prior years the intent is to provide some synthesis of ideas and draft a communique summarizing major points.

Meetings are at Noon US/Canada Eastern Time on Wednesdays and last about an hour.

** Abstract: Ontology engineering is, at base, an exercise in logic. This is one of the central lessons of the University at Buffalo’s Applied Ontology MS program and emerging PhD training program. In this talk, I use Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) to show how rigorous logical discipline underwrites good ontology engineering: consistency, interoperability, explanatory power, and scalable data quality. Drawing on themes covered throughout UB’s applied ontology curriculum, I examine how BFO’s realist commitments, category distinctions - such as continuant versus occurrent and dependent versus independent entity - and relation hierarchies constrain modeling choices and help prevent common errors. I will also discuss how students and practitioners are trained to translate competency questions into formally testable constraints, construct genus–differentia definitions aligned with BFO categories and use automated reasoning to evaluate ontological commitments.
** Bio: Dr. John Beverley is an Assistant Professor at the University at Buffalo (UB) and director of the MS and PhD in Applied Ontology programs. He is one of the developers of the ISO/IEC 21838-2 top-level standard Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), chair of the IEEE P3195 Mid-Level Ontology standard working group, and core developer on numerous BFO-based ontology projects. Prior to joining UB, Dr. Beverley was Senior Ontologist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, integrating semantic web technologies with machine learning to support predictive analytics, promote explainable AI, and automate error detection in complex software.

As the masters program is completely remote, I am not clear how will a student be able to engage with domain experts and actually enjoy the "discussion and collective churning" part of it.

A lot of the work lies in being able to guide in questioning and reason through the information the domain expert is providing into a logical consistent structure.

These represent some conceptualization that emphasizes more contextually expressive, often intuitive descriptions of entities/relations; not always currently suitable for formal representation unless higher logics are used and thus difficult for automated inference.

In this talk, I use Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) to show how rigorous logical discipline underwrites good ontology engineering: consistency, interoperability, explanatory power, and scalable data quality. Drawing on themes covered throughout UB’s applied ontology curriculum, I examine how BFO’s realist commitments, category distinctions - such as continuant versus occurrent and dependent versus independent entity - and relation hierarchies constrain modeling choices and help prevent common errors. I will also discuss how students and practitioners are trained to translate competency questions into formally testable constraints, construct genus–differentia definitions aligned with BFO categories and use automated reasoning to evaluate ontological commitments.
** Bio: Dr. John Beverley is an Assistant Professor at the University at Buffalo (UB) and director of the MS and PhD in Applied Ontology programs. He is one of the developers of the ISO/IEC 21838-2 top-level standard Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), chair of the IEEE P3195 Mid-Level Ontology standard working group, and core developer on numerous BFO-based ontology projects. Prior to joining UB, Dr. Beverley was Senior Ontologist at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, integrating semantic web technologies with machine learning to support predictive analytics, promote explainable AI, and automate error detection in complex software.

The [[OntologySummit|Ontology Summit]] is an annual series of events that involves the ontology community and communities related to each year's theme chosen for the summit. The Ontology Summit was started by Ontolog and NIST, and the program has been co-organized by Ontolog and NIST along with the co-sponsorship of other organizations that are supportive of the Summit goals and objectives.

As part of Ontolog’s general advocacy to bring ontology science and related engineering into the mainstream, we endeavor to facilitate discussion and knowledge sharing amongst stakeholders and interested parties relevant to the use of ontologies. The results will be synthesized and summarized in the form of the Ontology Summit 2026 Communiqué, with expanded supporting material provided on the web and in journal articles.

= Process and Deliverables =
The [[OntologySummit2026|Ontology Summit 2026]] will consist of virtual discourse (over our archived mailing lists), virtual presentations and panel sessions as part of recorded video conference calls.
As in prior years the intent is to provide some synthesis of ideas and draft a communique summarizing major points.

12:28:03 Michael DeBellis : This is not what I was expecting in a talk about interoperability. When I think about Interoperability, the last thing I think of is Porter. I see Interoperability as broadly two dimensions:
# Communication interoperability: message and event busses like RabbitMQ, Kafka, connectors that resolve issues between calling an API in Java vs. one in Python. Integrating two systems where both use knowledge graphs but one uses Neo4J and another uses OWL/RDF Standards like MCP.
# Semantic Interoperability. Resolving the fact that within the same company several groups have concepts like Customer but Customer mean different things for Marketing vs. Fulfillment, vs. Catalog and Shopping Cart teams. IT in the past usually just does this ad hoc. I worked with HL7 for a while and at the time, trying to define a common object model was greeted with wooden stakes and garlic but decades later they do it with HL7 FHIR.
* deddy : Folks at the top will need to allocate resources. Top level trained on Porter.
** Michael DeBellis : Assuming that is true, and that Porter is more than just standard MBA business babble, you could say the same thing about any problem: building better reasoners, supporting Big Data, etc. it all has to be justified at a business level so not sure why it matters more for Interoperability.
* Ram Sriram : What is the current State of Art on using FHIR for Semantic Interoperability?
** Michael DeBellis : Don't know. I think it has made some surprisingly good traction but haven't been working with it.

That's why we don't use the Waterfall model. Because you just aren't going to get it right the first time and the best way you know how you are wrong is to deploy something and get feedback from the users. And in spite of what some people say: change is constant in business so even if you get the ontology perfect, it's going to change so you need an Agile process.

The [[OntologySummit|Ontology Summit]] is an annual series of events that involves the ontology community and communities related to each year's theme chosen for the summit. The Ontology Summit was started by Ontolog and NIST, and the program has been co-organized by Ontolog and NIST along with the co-sponsorship of other organizations that are supportive of the Summit goals and objectives.

As part of Ontolog’s general advocacy to bring ontology science and related engineering into the mainstream, we endeavor to facilitate discussion and knowledge sharing amongst stakeholders and interested parties relevant to the use of ontologies. The results will be synthesized and summarized in the form of the Ontology Summit 2026 Communiqué, with expanded supporting material provided on the web and in journal articles.

= Process and Deliverables =
The [[OntologySummit2026|Ontology Summit 2026]] will consist of virtual discourse (over our archived mailing lists), virtual presentations and panel sessions as part of recorded video conference calls.
As in prior years the intent is to provide some synthesis of ideas and draft a communique summarizing major points.

I am Massimo Callisto De Donato, a Research Fellow in Computer Science at the University of Camerino, Italy. My research interests include the Internet of Things, Digital Twins, and Artificial Intelligence, with a particular focus on Smart Buildings.

I am currently involved in research activities exploring the combination of Smart Building models and IoT integration, investigating approaches and architectures that can support information retrieval, data analysis, and decision-making in Smart Building systems. In this context, I am particularly interested in how ontologies, knowledge graphs, and hybrid AI approaches can improve interoperability, semantic understanding, and building data integration.

I often find that non technical users pick up ontologies and Protege very quickly. I also avoid using jargon and just say an ontology is 1) the schema model for a graph database 2) A schema model that includes automatic validation and reasoning. I.e., start with things they understand first.

= Ontology Summit 2026 =

The [[OntologySummit|Ontology Summit]] is an annual series of events that involves the ontology community and communities related to each year's theme chosen for the summit. The Ontology Summit was started by Ontolog and NIST, and the program has been co-organized by Ontolog and NIST along with the co-sponsorship of other organizations that are supportive of the Summit goals and objectives.

As part of Ontolog’s general advocacy to bring ontology science and related engineering into the mainstream, we endeavor to facilitate discussion and knowledge sharing amongst stakeholders and interested parties relevant to the use of ontologies. The results will be synthesized and summarized in the form of the Ontology Summit 2026 Communiqué, with expanded supporting material provided on the web and in journal articles.

= Process and Deliverables =
The [[OntologySummit2026|Ontology Summit 2026]] will consist of virtual discourse (over our archived mailing lists), virtual presentations and panel sessions as part of recorded video conference calls.
As in prior years the intent is to provide some synthesis of ideas and draft a communique summarizing major points.

Meetings are at Noon US/Canada Eastern Time on Wednesdays and last about an hour.

** A crucial choice when designing an ontology concerns, of course, what to include in the domain of discourse. The entities that are relevant for our conceptualization of reality—those we implicitly assume to exist—are typically far more numerous than those we explicitly choose to talk about. So, our ''cognitive domain'' is much broader than our ''domain of discourse''. For example, when we say that John and Mary are married, our language only refers to them, although we know that there has been a wedding event and that an ongoing marriage relationship exists. It is up to us to introduce these additional entities in our domain of discourse, should we need to represent and reason about them. In this talk I will argue that formal ontology gives us a clear criterion for this decision: include in the domain the ''truthmakers'' of the relevant propositions we aim to represent. In this talk I will introduce different kinds of truthmakers, depending on the types of properties and relationships involved, and I will show how various ''truthmaking patterns'' can enhance the explanatory value of an ontology.
** Nicola Guarino is a retired research associate at the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies of the Italian National Research Council (ISTC-CNR), and former director of the ISTC-CNR Laboratory for Applied Ontology (LOA) based in Trento. He has been playing a leading role in the ontology field, developing a strongly interdisciplinary approach that combines together Computer Science, Philosophy, and Linguistics. Among the most well known results of his lab, the OntoClean methodology and the DOLCE foundational ontology. He has been founder and co-editor-in-chief of the ''Applied Ontology'' journal, founder and former president of the ''International Association for Ontology and its Applications'' (IAOA). He is also an ''ER'' fellow and a fellow of the ''European Association for Artificial Intelligence'' (EurAI). Recently he received the ''Peter P. Chen'' award for outstanding contributions to the field of conceptual modeling. On the theoretical side, his current research interests are focusing on the ontological foundations of knowledge representation and conceptual modeling and specifically the ontology of events, processes, and relationships, while on the application side he has been focusing on enterprise modeling, ontology of economics, and manufacturing. He is also interested in leveraging ontological analysis and semantic technologies to improve cognitive transparency, social accountability, and participatory governance of artificial intelligence artifacts. His publications got 32,000+ citations, with H-index=56 according to Google Scholar
