Abstract

OntologySummit2011 Theme: "Making the Case for Ontology"

  • Session Title: Grand Challenges

This is our 6th Ontology Summit, a joint initiative by NIST, Ontolog, NCOR, NCBO, IAOA & NCO_NITRD. The theme adopted for this Ontology Summit is: "Making the Case for Ontology."

This year's Ontology Summit seeks to address the need to provide concrete evidence of successful deployment of ontologies by examining several application domains for such examples, and in better articulating where different "strengths" of ontological representation are best applied. To support that, the summit also aims to classify the categories of applications where ontology has been, and could be, successfully applied; to identify distinct types of metrics that might be used in evaluating the return on investment in an ontology application (cost, capability, performance, etc.); to lay out some strategies for articulating a case for ontological applications; and to identify remaining challenges and roadblocks to a wider deployment of such applications that represent promising application areas and research challenges for the future. The findings of the summit will be documented in the form of a communiqué intended for public consumption.

This Panel Session is organized and co-chaired by our Track-5 co-champions. They are bringing together an expert panel to join everyone here today to summarize current state of the art on ontology use, determine gaps that hinder real-world ontology applications, enumerate the actions that need to be taken to overcome these gaps, and brainstorm ideas for a grand challenge problem.

Peter P. Yim: == session started 9:38am PDT ... Ram D. Sriram doing the opening

Steve Ray: Standard cheat sheet: *2 to mute; *3 to unmute

Peter P. Yim: == Chris Welty presenting ...

AlexGarcia: where are Chris slides?

Peter P. Yim: @AlexGarcia - Chris Welty will not have slides (as indicated on the session page)

Peter P. Yim: will those participants who are still recognized as "anonymous" please morph into your

real name (click on the "Settings" button at the top center and change there) so we can know who's

here and properly attribute contributions

anonymous1 morphed into David Makovoz

Rex Brooks: I assume that "Shallow Methods" doesn't include deep ontological resources, e.g.

triplestores. Correct? If so, how was the semantic "meaning" of text sources derived?

anonymous1 morphed into Chris Chute

Peter P. Yim: @RamSriram (or any of the co-chairs) - would you please capture ChrisWelty's suggested

Grand Challenge problem(s) onto the chat-board

Ernie Lucier: ChrisWelty's grand challenge problem examples (from the medical field) - (i) significantly

improving diagnosis, especially when clear indications from test methods are not available, (ii) in

treatment, especially in personalizing treatment, (iii) in drug interaction, where a lot of the

information in drug interaction databases are still only available in English.

Peter P. Yim: === Ramesh Jain presenting now ...

Michael Grüninger: Are RameshJain's slides available in PDF?

Peter P. Yim: @MichaelGruninger, there are alternate pdf versions of the slides under

http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/OntologySummit2011/2011-03-24_Grand-Challenges/ ... the pdf's

won't carry all the information of the ppt's though

Christopher Spottiswoode: @PeterYim: How do we see the slides in the downloaded zip files? (Please

excuse my ignorance!)

Peter P. Yim: @ChristopherSpottiswoode - when your click on the slide links (like [o\0-Chair], [2-Jain],

etc.) they should not be zipped; it should fire up on your browser right away, or call up the

associated app (if your browser is configured to do it, and the right app is available)

Chris Chute: The slides (for Jain at least) do not "open up" but come down as an odd zip file.

Rex Brooks: 75% own Mobile Phones? Sounds awfully high to me.

Peter P. Yim: @MichaelGruninger - your hand is still up, can you type your question here (if you have

one)?

anonymous1 morphed into Anna Cianciara

Alden Dima: @RexBrooks - according to Wolfram Alpha, it looks like there are 4 billion cell phones

(using 2004-2008 data). There are probably more now.

Rex Brooks: In Emergency Management this is referred to as crowd sourcing and what the whole process

does is "curation" of the situation as a way to include information from the public in decision

making.

Rex Brooks: @Alden: guess I'm just behind the the wave

Alden Dima: @Rex - me too. Still have a box full of slide rules hanging around.

AlexGarcia: I have problems opening the this speakers slides. is there just a ppt file? I opened and

all I got were a lot of xml files -power point does not recognize them

AlexGarcia: sorry, but it is probably me not knowing about this format for slides, I just cannot

open them.... I get a lot of xml files that power point can't deal with. Could someone upload the

ppt file for this talk?

Anna Cianciara: The pdf for this presentation seems to be available here:

http://ontolog.cim3.net/file/work/OntologySummit2011/2011-03-24_Grand-Challenges/Ontology-based-Recognition--RameshJain_20110322a.pdf

AlexGarcia: thanks

Peter P. Yim: @AlexGarcia - would the pdf be good enough? (if not, you might want to email Ramesh Jain

yourself and ask him for a ppt version of the slides (I only received the pptx ... and any

conversion will be somewhat lossy)

EliotSiegel: Peter, I have a hard stop at 1:30pm Eastern time

Peter P. Yim: == EliotSiegel presenting ...

Ramesh Jain: I will need to logout in 5 minutes. So any questions can be answered off-line.

Peter P. Yim: Thank you very much, Ramesh

Peter P. Yim: @All - Ramesh's email is available at his page on the Ontolog Wiki -

http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?RameshJain

anonymous2 morphed into Chris Frangione

anonymous1 morphed into DilvanMoreira

Rex Brooks: It's good to see how far these questions have been explored and difficult areas

identified. Getting these disparate, sometimes legally quarantined, datasources into a system that

will allow a genuine "Big Picture" to be developed and resourced as needed is a problem.

Peter P. Yim: == Chris Chute presenting ...

anonymous1 morphed into Dustin Cote

Alan Rector: [ref. ChrisChute's reference to the person on the Stanford Protege team working on the

ICD-11] Her name is Tania Tudorache

Chris Frangione: Peter - Just as an FYI, I am online with you all now.

Peter P. Yim: @ChrisFrangione - Hi!

Leo Obrst: Just joined, had meeting.

AlexGarcia: I'd say how do we use more than just DL, there is ontological pluralism. OWL is not the

one and only

David Makovoz: Question for Dr. Chute. Did you look into probabilistic ontologies?

Chris Chute: I understand that DL subsume a family from simple FL- through SHIQ or more sophisticated

ones. I confess I am not familair w/ probablistic DLs, though I have heard of probablistic

ontologies (though I don't know as much as I should).

David Makovoz: Dr. Chute. Examples of probabilistic ontologies are bayesowl, prowl. They've been

around for a while.

Chris Chute: Thanks, I will look into them.

Bobbin Teegarden: I would also be interested in hearing more about 'probabilistic ontologies', a

future presentation here?

Alan Rector: Pragmatically, at the moment, my view is that the issue is more how to combine the

strengths of probabilistic systems and DLs rather than look to integration. DLs/OWL are good at

providing a framework, but they do only certain limited reasoning tasks.

Peter P. Yim: @Bobbin - we had a session on Ontolog Forum on "Probabilistic Reasoning and Ontology

Evaluation" a little while back - (in case you weren't aware) check out

http://ontolog.cim3.net/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?ConferenceCall_2007_03_29

Bobbin Teegarden: thanks for the URL Peter.

David Makovoz: The 2007/03/29 conference is mostly about prowl. Bayesowl is not presented there.

Peter P. Yim: indeed ... time to do another update session ... (please suggest to [ontolog-forum])

Peter P. Yim: == Nabil Adam presenting ...

Peter P. Yim: == Christopher Frangione presenting ...

AlexGarcia: Bartholomew-Frangione's slides, could someone upload a ppt or a pdf for those slides? I

have downloaded the zip file and it has a lot of xml, again my power point cant deal with those

files -probably it is just me not knowing how to deal with this files.

Steve Ray: @Alex: Those slides are in .pptx format (i.e. Powerpoint 2007). For now, I suggest you

view the slides through the VNC shared screen viewer.

Steve Ray: Thanks for a very interesting set of talks.
