8) Key Issues discussion:

  • Planning out a NASA-Ontolog collaboration
    • Peter P. Yim gave everyone a brief overview on the developing initiative during the regular call (let's call that "session-1"), as Jeanne Holm and Andrew Schain was unable to make it to that call.
    • This has been brewing since Jeanne Holm and Peter P. Yim met in Washington DC back on 2007.03.01 at the Government Printing Office (where Nancy Faget hosted a "Knowledge Cafe" event, which Peter was able to attend because he was in town for SusanTurnbull's CEW#58.) Since then, Peter, Jeanne and Andrew Schain has been exchanging ideas on what and how this could be put together that would allow us to get exposed to some of the good (ontology / semantics / knowledge management) work that is ongoing at NASA, and in a way that involves the whole community and drives us to something actionable.
  • Jeanne Holm and Peter P. Yim finally managed to confer at ~5:00pm PDT (let's call this "session-2"). The following recapitulates on that discussion and earlier exchanges, forming the strawman for the entire initiative.
    • Yes, we do have a project - an upcoming NASA-Ontolog collaboration
    • it will be a virtual mini-series of virtual seminars, panel dicussions, online discourse etc.
    • it will span about 6 months.
    • the Theme of the initiative will be: "Ontology in Knowledge Management and Decision Support"
    • besides Jeanne, Andy and Peter, we will invite a few more people to join us to form an organizing committee to put this whole thing together
    • the announcement and online discourse will conceivably be cross-posted to [ontolog-forum] <ontolog-forum-at-ontolog.cim3.net> and [kmgov]<kmgov-at-list.jpl.nasa.gov> (or child lists off them, depending on participation and traffic.)
    • we'll consider offering all the virtual seminar and panel discussion events both in the real world setting as augmented conference calls, as well as in a virtual world setting (at "Second Life")
    • (as Jeanne was just about to start her leave), we'll pick up the conversation after she returns, in about 2~3 weeks.
    • in the mean time, we'll ponder over candidates we might invite to the organizing team, compelling topics and people we might invite as speakers or panelists.
    • Peter will get a wiki page started, as the home page for this project/initiative - see: OKMDS (previously: OntologyKMandDecisionSupport)

9) New project proposals.

10) Sponsorship and funding.

11) Other business.

  • FYI ... Leo Obrst is now trying to get support to bid for having ISWC'09 to be held in Washington DC, USA
    • noting that: ISWC'07 will be at Busan, Korea, and ISWC'08 will be at Karlsruhe, Germany

12) Next meeting date and adjourn

  • Our next meeting/call will be the Thu 2007.08.02, same time. Details will be at ConferenceCall_2007_08_02 closer to the time ... talk to you then!
  • this call session adjourned:
    • session-1: 10:30~11:31 am PDT
    • session-2: 4:48~5:08 pm PDT
