Agenda Ideas

Agenda & Proceedings

1) Welcome & confirmation of agenda

2) Appointment of secretary to take minutes

3) Roll-call of participants

4) Upcoming meeting & event schedule (near future)

  • Nominal meeting types (on a monthly basis):
    • member regular meeting
    • invited speaker session
    • scheduled discussion
    • project review
    • workshop / work session
    • planning
  • Scheduled Ontolog Events
    • start with this section first - Kurt: easier for the flow of the agenda
  • Scheduled Discussions for the next 2 months (DavidWhitten: maybe we should designate a moderator, and then coordinate the event from there, in a fashion similar to speaker events.)
    • August 25, 2005 discussion session - moderator: Rex Brooks - see: ConferenceCall_2005_08_25
      • Subject: "Healthcare Informatics Landscapes, Roadmaps, and Blueprints: Towards a Business Case Strategy for Large Scale Ontology Projects"
      • Panelists: Bob Smith, Brand Niemann, David Whitten, Marc Wine, Mark Musen + invited: BrettTrusko, Roy Morgan, Ram Sriram
    • Oct. 27 2005 discussion - Moderator: Nicolas Rouquette - subject: Semantic Web Service Ontology Standard - see: ConferenceCall_2005_10_27/Prep
    • Adam: need OWL & SWRL for OWL ontologies to really be useful
    • Nicolas Rouquette -- other topics lined up?
    • a panel with speaker representating: SUMO, OpenCyc Upper Ontology, DOLCE, ... (suggested by PeterYim)
      • possibly teaming up with SICoP and their CUO-WG; after independent sessions on Cyc and DOLCE
    • Rex: possibility of working with Duane on a follow-up to the last SOA discussion
    • Rex suggsted we should also invite UDDI and XMDR people, and possibly to have all three parties (regrep, uddi & xmdr) on a panel
    • we will not schedule a technical discussion in Sep. 2005
    • candidates for November, 2005
      • Rex: propose "Emergency Response"
      • Kurt: we should revisit "CCTS ontology" for Nov. (even Sep.) - we'll talk to Duane again if he shows up next week; if he doesn't Kurt, will ping Duane.
      • Anders: we should have a "Tools / Testing" discussion
      • Kurt: "on metamodels, independent of the representation" (at a level that allows us to avoid the language war)
        • Bob: as a segway into things like pi-calculus, tec.
      • Peter P. Yim: "moving from data standards to data-model- and semantic-model-driven eBusiness standards"
      • Duane Nickull: "Ontological and Semantic Implementation Panel" - some time in the future - Duane will start a page in preparation on it
    • we had a discussion on when we should engage non-open/commercial work
      • we should keep the community aware of the bleeding edge of the space - open or not
      • "unsolicited" presentations of commercial technologies and products would be a no no; have to be under "invitation"
      • need careful review and oversight; avoid conflict of interest
      • we have to make sure we don't invite / become a free advertising space
      • stay on research and the pre-competitive stage of the technoology, if we can
    • for example - Adobe XMP or some of their semantic web related work would be of interest; or the big SERACH vendors
  • Upcoming Events of interest
    • Sep. 14, 2005 - 2nd DRM Public Forum (Washington DC) (Susan, Brand & Mike Daconta among the organizers; Mark & Peter among presenter)
    • Sep. 12~16, 2005 - UN/CEFACT Forum - (Lyon, France) (Anders, Bill, Duane)
    • Sep. 23, 12005 - Collaborative Expedition Workshop #44 (at NSF) - featuring the Jon Bosak joint-program with Ontolog
    • OASIS ebXML registry-repository webinar - Sep. or Oct. (Monica, Joe)
    • National Center for Ontological Research (NCOR) Opening - Oct. 27, 2005 (Buffalo, NY) - ref: http://ontolog.cim3.net/forum//ontolog-forum/2005-08/msg00000.html

5) Communications, logistics, & work protocols issues

  • SessionArchivesOnCD
    • not enough demand to make the dvelopment and production of this CD or DVD worth the while (at least on the current exercise.)
    • however, consider other possibilities:
      • capturing a snapshot of this body of knowledge (for backup purposes; as an insurance to our sustainability concerns.)
      • distribution through other channels (IEEE, ACM, ...) that helps us promote our cause
      • as a media where, say, our "Journal" is delivered on (see more discussion below
  • Transscript to discussion session
    • any volunteer (member? your students?)
    • any sponsor?
    • let defer this to a planning team discussion

6) Follow-ups from previous calls

  • post-mortem on the 2005.08.11 Jim Hendler: Semantic Q&A session
    • what worked well
      • best attended so far
      • extended invitation list now
    • what could be improved
      • background noise - Kurt: we can mute everyone ... what it takes is for the speaker to come in with the organizer code - great!
    • ideas for the future
    • other remarks
  • possible meeting/call to follow-up with UDEF folks to review Ontolog's comments (suggested by MikeDaconta) [attn: DuaneNickull]
  • Bob and Nicolas will work on the ontological lessons learned in our exercise on RegularConferenceCall scheduling

7) Current Project Status Report

  • Status of Protege-KIF project work
  • UBL liaison report
  • SICoP liaison report

8) project work session / discussion

9) New project proposals

10) Sponsorship and funding

  • possibility of "packaging" our events for sponsorship
    • we can package up (a) the monthly speakers and (b) the discussion sessions
  • Bob: think of going for European or other International sponsors

11) Other business

12) Next meeting date and adjourn

  • regular call adjourned 11:20 am PDT; the planning team (Kurt, Bob and Peter) continued until 12:23pm
  • next call will be on Thu 2005.08.25 starting at 10:30 am PDT
